C.J. pulled up to the police station at five that evening, driving Jed’s truck to pick up Nate.

She strolled into the police station, delighted she’d found the perfect place for their date. She greeted Kristi Collins, the dispatcher, who waved C.J. back to Nate’s office. She stepped through the open door to find Nate pulling on his coat.

“Please tell me you’re getting ready to leave for our date and not going out on a call.”

The warmth in his eyes gave her the answer she wanted. “I am officially off duty.”

C.J. fisted the air. “Houston, we are a go.” She threw her arms around him and kissed him soundly. The expression on his face had her taking a step back. “What’s wrong?”

He leaned against the desk and crossed one leg over the other. While he appeared relaxed, C.J. sensed the tenseness within him. “I talked to your dad and Jed this afternoon.”

That didn’t sound good. “About what?”

“Us.”

C.J. groaned. “Why would you do that? This is a relationship between us, not me, you, my father and my brother.” This is what she hated about small towns and her family. They knew every detail of her life.

“They are my friends. I wanted to assure them I wouldn’t hurt you.”

“That’s a promise you can’t make. People get hurt in relationships. It’s a fact of life.”

“And maybe why we should take a step back and think about what we’re doing.”

C.J. blew out an annoyed breath. “Maybe you’re right. This certainly isn’t what I signed up for. I was attracted to the flirt with attitude. That’s who I asked out and if he’s not coming, then let’s just save ourselves some disappointment and call it quits right now.”

Nate stared at her a long moment, then said, “So, where are you taking me?”

The flirt returned and she wagged a finger at him. “Sorry, but you’ll have to wait and see.”

Clearly not the response he’d wanted. “How will I know if I’m dressed appropriately?”

He’d turned her own words on her, but she held firm. “Casual dress.”

“But—”

She pressed a finger to his lips silencing him. “It’s a surprise and that’s all I’m going to say.” She waved to Kristi as they passed her door, and Kristi gave her a thumbs-up.

Exiting the police station, they climbed into Jed’s truck.

“Something happen to your car?”

“No.”

“Why are we in your brother’s truck?”

“It will all make sense soon.” C.J. started the truck and headed north out of town. The headlights cut through the fog as the road twisted and turned.

Nate’s thumb brushed over her wrist.

“I can’t concentrate when you do that.”

His smile was wicked. “Then pull over and you can concentrate on something besides driving.”

Oh, how she wanted to do that, but she stayed the course. “I have something special planned that I think you’ll enjoy.”

Nate’s thumb swept over her earlobe. “I have a few ideas for some special activities we can do right here.”

His words drew out a deep, lusty laugh. “I’m not denying the something special you have in mind isn’t a consideration.
